The holy festival is dedicated to Devi Savitri, who was a brave woman and compelled Yama Raj (the Lord of Death) to give a new lease of life to her dead husband, Satyawan. As per Hindu mythology, women offer prayers to the Banyan tree as it represents the ‘Trimurtis’ – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
