Ravidas Jayanti celebrates the birthday of Guru Ravidas Ji. He was born into a low-caste family that was regarded as untouchables. He was born in 1376 CE, in a country close to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh in India. He devoted his entire life to inequity based on caste and class. It is celebrated in the month of January or February all over India but especially in Punjab and North India.
Several hymns are written by him in praise of God. There are also 41 verses of him incorporated in the holy book of the Sikhs, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Therefore this festival is celebrated by Hindus as well as Sikhs. On the occasion huge procession of his portrait is carried out in the streets, Akhand Path is read and feasts and prayers are arranged in the temples belonging to Ravidas Ji.
